Eden Runners 2 v 1 ASDA
A thrilling game was played out before a packed crowd at the Newton Rigg Bowl on Sunday. After the emotion of the national anthems the 2 teams played out an enthralling tactical contest. The ERs relying on guile and experience quickly settled into a pattern of massed defence with the occasional breakout over the half way line. An early goal by Johnny settled the nerves as a the ER defence marshalled by veterans Dave P and Andy S gave ASDA a lesson in Inter Milan's defensive tactics of the 1960's. With 'big' Paul battering the opposition in midfield it was left to Johnny and Martin to attack down the wings. Despite many opportunities ER could not add to their lead and ASDA became increasingly confident in their attacks. Saves from a series of stand-in keepers kept them at bay but eventually in the 45th minute the inevitable happened as Dave P was for the first time found wanting in a contest with a player half is age and twice his height. The result a well hit drive past Big Paul into the far corner of the net. The ER supporters were silent (there weren't any!) but the ASDA supporters were delirious (Pottery Mary, who had originally come to support ER but had changed allegiance when Arwen had been transferred to the opposition in a shock pre-match move). But ER's are made of stern stuff and after a lot of shouting, recrimination and arm waving took the attack to the opposition. What followed was a display of attacking football not seen since Brazil demolished Italy in the 1970 World Cup Final. Unfortunately the display did have slight differences in that shots tended to reach heights not seen since the last NASA space mission. Then suddenly in the dying seconds when the crowd was packing up her handbag a swift move done the right wing resulted in Big Paul firing into the roof of the net to secure victory. A disconsolate ASDA trudged from the pitch vowing vengeance and the ER's vowing they would go to the Aggie for a pint where they were subjected to Arwen reeling off a list of reasons why we were lucky to win most of which were quite valid!!!
A rematch is anticipated in March: please let me know if you are interested?
